Research Methodology: About 30 years ago I realized that, with changing technology, the same degree of experimental control could be developed for field as for laboratory investigations without the constraint of reduced scales. This led me to commit a considerable amount of my time to developing the following technologies:

1.     A high speed, stable, research vessel, Djinnang IV, transportable by shipping container to any field site in the world.

2.     Over the same period, I developed a series of in-situ sensors and loggers with GSM communication capability for both real-time high precision model forcing data (river and groundwater water level, temperature and conductivity) and validation data (water column temperature, conductivity and surface meteorological data streams, and surface wave amplitude and direction spectra).

3.     A free-falling water profiling instrument, called the Portable Flux Profiler (PFP) and its autonomous counterpart, the Controlled Lagrangian Drogue (CLD). This is a unique profiler equipped with microstructure, velocity, temperature and conductivity sensors, a full suite of fine scale sensors (temperature, conductivity, PAR, turbidity, pH, DO, Total Chlorophyll), a modified fluoroprobe that allows the measurement of the spectral characteristics of yellow substance and 4 groups of algae and an underwater holographic microscope, that together with image recognition software permits profiles of algal species to be obtained at 5cm vertical resolution.

4.      Developed the hydrodynamic models DYRESM, DYRIM and ELCOM and the coupled ecological model CAEDYM, as well as the data base management model ARMS and the web application RMSO. Together this suite of software allows us to carry out fieldwork having both the field data and the numerical predictions available simultaneously and perhaps more importantly, by using the numerical forecast facility we can choose the timing and location in the field to maximize the signal to noise ratio for the process under study. This strategy thus gives us not only the same control as in the laboratory, but also allows us to study processes at prototype scales, eliminating the constraint of laboratory experiments.
